Helioseismic Estimation of Convective Overshoot in the Sun

چکیده

By using the periodic signal present in the frequencies of oscillation due to the base of the solar convection zone, Monteiro, Christensen-Dalsgaard & Thompson (1994) gave an upper limit to the extent of a layer of convective overshooting in the Sun. Alternative studies (Roxburgh & Vorontsov, 1994) have suggested that it may not be possible to do so since the amplitude of the signal does not vary monotonically with the extent of the layer. In this work a new more complete set of models is used to compare the values of the amplitude obtained from the tting of the signal with the expected amplitudes. These are determined using the assumption that the rapid variation occurring at the base of the convection zone and creating the periodic signal can be described as discontinuities of the sound-speed derivatives. The amplitude of the signal due to the discontinuity of the third derivative of the sound speed is then proportional to the derivative of the radiative gradient, while the amplitude resulting from the discontinuity of the second derivative is proportional to the diierence between radiative and adiabatic gradients at the position where the transition occurs. The latter is non-zero only if overshoot is present. Asymptotic predictions of the amplitudes of the signal in the p-mode frequencies are in good agreement with the values found from tting models with substantial overshoot regions; as was also found by Monteiro et al. the observed solar frequencies place severe limits on the extent of overshoot of this nature.

A more realistic representation of overshoot at the base of the solar convective envelope as seen by helioseismology

The stratification near the base of the Sun’s convective envelope is governed by processes of convective overshooting and element diffusion, and the region is widely believed to play a key role in the solar dynamo. The stratification in that region gives rise to a characteristic signal in the frequencies of solar p modes, which has been used to determine the depth of the solar convection zone a...

Lithium Depletion in the Sun: a Study of Mixing Based on Hydrodynamical Simulations

Based on radiation hydrodynamics modeling of stellar convection zones, a diffusion scheme has been devised describing the downward penetration of convective motions beyond the Schwarzschild boundary (overshoot) into the radiative interior. This scheme of exponential diffusive overshoot has already been successfully applied to AGB stars. Here we present an application to the Sun in order to dete...

Numerical Simulations of Penetration and Overshoot in the Sun

We present numerical simulations of convective overshoot in a twodimensional model of the solar equatorial plane. The simulated domain extends from 0.001 R⊙ to 0.93 R⊙, spanning both convective and radiative regions. We show that convective penetration leads to a slightly extended, mildly subadiabatic temperature gradient beneath the convection zone below which there is a rapid transition to a ...

Energy transport, overshoot, and mixing in the atmospheres of M-type main- and pre-main-sequence objects

We constructed hydrodynamical model atmospheres for mid M-type main-, as well as pre-main-sequence (PMS) objects. Despite the complex chemistry encountered in these cool atmospheres a reasonably accurate representation of the radiative transfer is possible, even in the context of time-dependent and three-dimensional models. The models provide detailed information about the morphology of M-type ...

Helioseismic determination of Beryllium neutrinos produced in the Sun

We provide a determination of the Beryllium neutrino luminosity directly by means of helioseismology, without using additional assumptions. We have constructed solar models where Beryllium neutrino, (νBe) production is artificially changed by varying in an arbitrary way the zero energy astrophysical S-factor S34 for the reaction He + He → Be + γ. Next we have compared the properties of such mod...
